A prestigious $10,000 for Mansfield

I was really happy this morning when I grabbed the Crimson out of my door drop box and read that Harvey Mansfield, my moral reasoning professor from last semester, has just been awarded “the most prestigious honor the federal government bestows for intellectual achievement in the humanities”: he will be delivering the 2007 Jefferson Lecture.

And he is awarded $10,000 for the privilege.

Back from spring break

Well, everyone is back from a fun and restful spring break and seems ready to work hard for the last six weeks of school. (The end of year projects seemed to come around awfully quickly this year…)

I can’t believe that my sophomore year is almost over! I’m halfway through Harvard. I still feel like I just got here.

This week, my photo project is to take 90 pictures of different students in Harvard Yard.

So far I have taken 40, and I’ve gotten about 43 weird looks.

Today, we held my economics tutorial outside in Harvard Yard, on the steps of Memorial Church. I was sort of freezing… but at least winter is over.

It was odd: at one point, two men with a movie camera from CNN Spain came over and introduced themselves and filmed us holding class outside. Random?

Assassins in Cabot House

Cabot House is sponsoring a game of Assassin! If you’ve never heard of it, Assassin is a pretty popular game at college campuses (or other places where large groups of fun-loving people live or work in close proximity to one another). The idea is that everyone gets assigned another person to “assassinate” (in Cabot’s case, by tagging the person). If you get your target, you adopt their target, and so on. The last man/woman left alive wins.

The game starts in a few weeks, and will probably last for 48 hours or so. I’m excited; I’m sure that the game will be another creative example of how much fun the community in the Harvard houses can be.

Holi!

On Saturday, my blockmates and I attended Harvard’s annual Holi festival, which was hosted by Dharma, Harvard’s Hindu student organization. Holi is a spring holiday - “the Festival of Colors” - in which participants play games, eat delicious of Indian food, and apparently celebrate around a bonfire (although the fire part was conspicuously absent from our festivities in the Lowell JCR).

My two favorite parts of the day were:

1. Kabaddi, the best game ever. Look it up on Wikipedia (article here) if you’ve never heard of it…

2. The throwing of the colored powders. Every color was there, and it was windy, and the powder was flying in the wind, and every color got all over everybody (see picture below). When someone throws powder on you, you’ve been blessed.
